Fort Sumner is a pleasant, leafy area of Bethesda, Maryland, named after a Civil War era Union fort. It is within the 20816 zip code and falls within the Wood Acres Elementary School district.
Fort Sumner afforded a clear view of the Potomac, and its role was to protect the river and the Union water supply.

Originally comprised of three separate forts called Fort Alexander, Fort Franklin, and Fort Riply, the defensive complex was enhanced into a single fort in 1863, and christened Fort Sumner after Major General Edwin V. Sumner, who passed away in the year it was completed.
After the Civil War, the fort was inhabited by freed slaves, whose descendants continued to reside in the vicinity until the 1950's. Today, nothing remains of the fort itself except an outline, and gun emplacements on Battery Bailey in adjacent Westmoreland Hills Park. Battery Bailey is an extension of the fort complex named after Colonel Guilford Dudley Bailey, who was killed in action during the Civil War.
Fort Sumner real estate is comprised almost entirely of residential homes, and valued at roughly around $1,000,000 per home. The premier attractions of Fort Sumner real estate, apart from the pleasant nature of the neighborhood, are the proximity to Washington DC across the Potomac, and the fact that Fort Sumner is part of Bethesda, home to some of the most sought after real estate in the region.
Fort Sumner is adjacent to Sumner, a more densely populated neighborhood with some condominium developments as well as detached homes.
