Westmoreland Hills is bordered by the neighborhood of Green Acres, River Road (also known as Route 190), Little Falls Park, Dalecarlia Reservoir, and Western Avenue NW, which separates Maryland from the District of Columbia. An aerial view reveals stark contrast between Washington DC on the one side and Westmoreland Hills on the other; whereas streets in Washington DC form a checkerboard grid pattern, the streets in Westmoreland Hills undulate along the contours of the hills, forming winding drives and gently curving lanes. Some of the elevated portions of the neighborhood overlook the densely wooded Dalecarlia Reservoir.

Being as close to Washington DC as it is, Westmoreland real estate is attractive for affluent commuters to the nation's seat of power. Westmoreland hills provides the secluded, refined ambience of a suburb, while being only a short distance from the country's capital. The local park, 10-acre Westmoreland Hills Park, provides residents with easy access to playgrounds, a softball field, and even a couple of tennis courts.

Westmoreland Hills is just a few minutes from Friendship Heights, a mixed-use complex home to blue-chip employers and numerous retail establishments. Also nearby are Downtown Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and a large general hospital.

Part of Westmoreland Hills, like many neighborhoods in Bethesda, was originally developed by the WC & AN Development Company, a real estate developer active in the capital region since the early 20th century. Consequently many homes for sale in Westmoreland Hills are Colonials and Cape Cods built in the pre-war years.

Community involvement and a sense of tradition are strong. The Westmoreland Hills Citizens Association contributes to the organization of the neighborhood, as well as smaller satellite neighborhoods nearby: Westgate, Overlook, Spring Hill, Yorktown Village, and Westhaven. A community newsletter helps keep neighbors in touch with each other about lost pets, parties, and other events.

Westmoreland Hills falls within the 20816 Zip Code, and lies within the Westgate Elementary School and Westbrook Middle School districts.
